Heat Pump Dehydration vs Freeze-Drying: Efficiency Report

A comparative thermodynamics analysis of energy consumption and nutrient retention.

In the world of premium eco-ingredients, the dehydration method determines everything: from vibrant color and pliable texture to retaining 98% of bioactive compounds. We conducted a rigorous physico-chemical comparison between our closed-loop Heat Pump Dehydration technology and classic freeze-drying (lyophilization) to prove that superior quality is possible without astronomical energy footprints.

1. Thermodynamic Bottlenecks of Freeze-Drying

Freeze-drying (lyophilization) requires deep freezing down to -50°C and long sublimation cycles under vacuum. While effective for powders, it consumes up to 45–50 kWh per kg of dry output and breaks capillary elasticity, resulting in a brittle, wafer-like crunch rather than the luscious, pliable chewiness expected from premium soft-dried mango snacks.

2. Closed-Loop Heat Pump Thermodynamics

ALHUNG's closed-loop heat pump drying utilizes a thermodynamic refrigeration cycle with latent heat recovery at 35°C–45°C. Moist air from the drying chambers passes over the evaporator, where water vapor condenses below the dew point and drains away. The heat pump condenser then reheats the dried air using recovered thermal energy. Because the loop is hermetically sealed, volatile fruit aromatics and sensitive vitamins are sealed inside the fruit tissues.

3. Energy Breakthrough: COP > 3.8 & Low Carbon

The core advantage of ALHUNG's Heat Pump technology is thermodynamic efficiency. Operating with a Coefficient of Performance (COP) above 3.8, it cuts energy consumption by up to 70% compared to freeze-drying and 60% compared to electric element dryers. This prevents 3.2 metric tons of CO2 emissions per ton of product and delivers a 100% Clean Label fruit with 0% SO2.

SECURE DOSSIER

Closed-loop Heat Pump drying represents the pinnacle for dried fruit manufacturing: it surpasses freeze-drying in texture and organoleptic chewiness while delivering unmatched commercial scalability and ESG compliance.
